Why does the Free tier exist?
Because every Redacto feature runs in your browser, the marginal cost of serving a Free user is close to zero — there is no server to run a redaction on. The paid tiers are meant to cover the things around the tool (support, deployment, customization), not to unlock the redaction itself. Free is capped at 10 pages per file, so there is a clear next step when you have a larger document.
What does the Free tier include?
$0 forever, and it is everything the app does today. Files up to 10 pages (any file size), the full mark editor, undo and redo, PII auto-detection, OCR, batch processing, URL share and the OCR cache. The 10-page cap is enforced in the app — drop an 11-page PDF and you get an explanation before any work happens. There is no account and no card.
What does the Single tier actually include?
$3 once, for one file, and it is on sale now. Single is Free's full feature set plus no page limit and all five OCR languages, and the purchase is a token that stays in your browser until you export one file with it. You pay on Stripe's own page, so no card number reaches this site, and the receipt comes from Stripe to the address you type there. Two things are still only designed: custom export branding and the per-file size cap. Neither is built, and this page marks them as planned rather than pretending otherwise.
When should I pick Free vs Single vs Pro?
Free if every file is 10 pages or fewer — that covers invoices, NDAs, letters and most resumes. Single ($3 once) is for the one-off large document: it opens one file whatever its length. Pro ($9 a month) is meant for people who process documents regularly, and it is not on sale yet, so there is no way to buy it today.
How is page count measured?
Client-side, in your browser, via pdfjs-dist, the moment you open the file. Nothing is uploaded. We measure the file's actual page count, not its size — a 5 MB file with 50 pages and a 50 MB file with 5 pages are counted differently.
Can I use a Single token on multiple files?
No. One purchase covers one file, and the token is consumed once you export it. After that the next file is back on the Free limits, and you would need another token. The token lives in your browser's own storage rather than on an account, so if you clear your browser's data before exporting, it is gone — export the file first, and write to us if you need it replaced.
What happens if I open a file over 10 pages on Free?
The app stops before it does any work and shows you a modal explaining the 10-page Free cap, with a link to this page and a button to dismiss it and stay on Free. The modal's other button takes you to the Single tier, which opens one file of any length. The file never leaves your browser either way — buying a token does not upload it, and the app does not learn anything about the document it opens.
What does Pro include beyond Free?
Planned: all five OCR languages, no page limit, unlimited batch size and priority support. One of those is already in the app — non-English OCR packs are locked to the paid tiers, so a Free visitor gets English OCR. The rest is not built. The only limit the app enforces on anyone today is the 10-page cap.
Why does Pro cost $9?
The $9 is meant to cover the things around the tool — support, hosting, taking payments — rather than the redaction, which costs nothing to run in your browser either way. The price is a design decision, not a quote, and the tier is not on sale.
What's the difference between batch size limits and file size limits?
Batch size is how many PDFs you can drop into the batch processor at once; file size is how big each PDF is. The tier design caps both — the plan is a 20-file batch on Free with no size cap, and a 500 MB per-file cap with unlimited batch on Pro. The app enforces neither of those today: you can drop in as many PDFs as you like, of any size, and the only limit anywhere is the 10-page cap per file.
Do I have to create an account?
Not to redact a PDF. The editor works with no account at all, and your file never leaves your browser either way. An account would only be needed for the things that require a server behind them, and there are none of those yet.
What happens to my files?
Nothing happens to them, because they never arrive. There is no server-side redaction path at all: parsing, marking and writing the redacted copy all happen in your browser. What is stored about a session is a set of usage events — which buttons get clicked, and the size of a file, in a coarse bucket rather than exactly — and those never contain a document, its text or its marks. They are anonymous unless you are signed in, in which case they carry your account id and nothing else. A rate-limit counter is stored as well, as a one-way hash of your address, and it is discarded within a few hours.
Can my organization use Redacto with our own infrastructure requirements?
Not today. There is no hosted version of Redacto, no single sign-on, no role-based access and no record of redactions being made. The product is the browser app and nothing else, and the privacy model is identical for every user precisely because there is no server-side copy of your document. If your requirements call for something more, tell us what they are and we will say plainly whether it is on the roadmap.
What languages are supported for OCR?
Five packs ship with the app: English, Spanish, French, German and Simplified Chinese. On the Free tier only English is unlocked — the other four need a Single token, which you can buy on this page. Each pack is 1–3 MB, is served from this site rather than a third-party CDN, and is fetched the first time you use that language.
Can I cancel Pro anytime?
There is nothing to cancel. Single is a one-off purchase, not a subscription, and a Single token is spent when you export the file it bought. Pro would be a subscription, and it is not on sale.
Can I switch tiers mid-cycle?
There is no billing cycle today. The only thing on sale is a one-off Single token. Pro is not on sale. When a subscription exists, an upgrade would take effect immediately and a downgrade at the end of the period.
Do you offer refunds?
Write to us and we will refund it. A Single token is $3 and covers one file, so there is little to argue about: if you bought it and it did not work, we refund it. The refund is handled in Stripe's dashboard and reaches your card in the same few days the charge took. We cannot refund a token you have already spent on an export, because that file is the thing you bought.
Is there a discount for annual billing?
Annual pricing is planned — roughly $90 a year for Pro against $9 a month — but it is not on sale and the figures are not final. The prices on the cards above are the design, not a quote.
Do you offer team or non-profit pricing?
That is not settled yet. We intend to offer special pricing for non-profits, journalists, public defenders and small clinics, but there is no published rate card — and we would rather say that than publish a number we would change later.
What happens to my PDFs when I cancel?
Nothing — they were never here. Your PDFs stay on your machine, because Redacto never receives them. There is no marks history and no saved templates to delete, because neither exists yet: your marks live in the page you are looking at, and what is stored about a session is the usage events described above and a rate-limit counter that is discarded within a few hours.
Is there an enterprise tier beyond Business?
Not today, and not in any detail we are willing to publish yet. There is no hosted deployment, no custom deployment and no document-management integration. If you need something along those lines, ask and we will tell you what is and is not possible.
